Commodities
Over 400 commodities are defined in Trade Currents’ analyses and
publications. They cover all U.S. imports and exports of goods as reported
by the U.S. Census Bureau. Commodities are defined by groups of Harmonized
System (HS) codes, with some defined by 2-digit codes and others by groups
of 4 or 6 digits.
Trade Data Measures
For each commodity, import and export value by mode of transport is
reported for vessel, air, and land modes. Land value largely includes
trade with Canada and Mexico, although some trade with other countries
moves through the Canadian and Mexican borders. In addition to value by
mode, data concepts for each commodity include containerized and
non-containerized value and weight, and air value and weight.
Country and Coastal Detail
In addition to modal detail, data for each commodity includes countries of
origin or destination and detail for five coastal ranges:
- Pacific
- Gulf
- Atlantic
- Canada/Great Lakes
- Mexico
- Trade by air does not include coastal detail
